Simply stated, counseling is any collaborative relationship
in which one person acts as a facilitator to help another person better
understand and resolve a particular concern. Friends and family members
provide a type of counseling, as do clergy, academic advisors, teachers,
coaches, and many others.
The Counseling Center staff is different from others who
may offer counseling because of their extensive training in psychology
and human behavior, and their ability to be objective and non-judgmental
in the counseling relationship. They also have experience in developing
confidential helping relationships and expertise in working with many
different types of individuals and concerns. The counseling process
is aimed at helping you resolve personal difficulties and acquire the
resources, skills, attitudes, abilities, and knowledge necessary to
succeed in the college environment and pursue satisfying and productive
lives.
During a time in your life full of new challenges and
significant changes, counseling can assist with the adjustment and personal
growth necessary to cope with the competing demands of school, family,
work, and social pressures. The Counseling Center can help ensure your
survival, satisfaction, and success while you attend the University
of Central Florida. Seeking an objective and professional perspective
is a mature answer in learning how to manage when you begin to feel
overwhelmed.
