Making an appointment at the Counseling Center is simple. If you are visiting the Counseling Center for the first time, you will be scheduled to meet with a counselor for an initial assessment. Students access services in two ways. First, you can call the Counseling Center at 407-823-2811 or drop by to schedule an initial assessment appointment that is convenient to your schedule. Because many students use our services, there may be a waiting period as the semester goes on (usually from a few days to 2 weeks) before the first appointment can be scheduled. Secondly, a limited number of appointments are available each day for students who need to be seen on that same day. Scheduling of these appointments start at 8:30am each day Monday -Friday. If you are in crisis, please inform the receptionist and we will make every attempt to respond to you as soon as possible.
For the initial assessment, you should
plan to arrive 30 minutes early to complete paperwork. You and your
counselor will then begin an assessment of your concerns and decide
how the Counseling Center may be of assistance to you. By the end of
the first appointment, your counselor will help you summarize your concerns
and explore treatment options for resolving them. If the Counseling
Center does not provide the level or type of services that you need,
we will refer you to another campus or community resource which may
better serve your needs. Some students find that the initial interview
itself is all they need to explore and clarify their feelings and options,
while others may decide to return for additional services.
If it is decided that the services offered
at the Counseling Center are appropriate given your needs, you will be asked to call the center at the assigned date so that you can schedule an appointment with your assigned counselor.
During an early visit with your
counselor, you will establish goals for counseling and determine the
approximate number of sessions you will attend. Brief individual counseling
sessions are typically scheduled on a weekly or bi-weekly basis for
approximately 45-50 minutes per session.
Please Note: There is a session limit for individual
counseling and your counselor will discuss this limit with you in your
initial appointment. Ongoing appointments are available between the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm.
Services at the Counseling Center are offered on an appointment
basis. Time is reserved in our schedules whenever a student requests
services. Canceling or missing appointments leads to an ineffective
use of valuable staff time which could have been afforded to other students
in need. If you must miss a session due to illness or emergency, please
contact the center to cancel the appointment as far in advance as possible.
You should be aware of the following policy that exists
at the Counseling Center regarding missed appointments. This policy
is necessitated by our mission to serve as many UCF students as possible
and we regret any hardships this may cause.
Any student who misses two consecutive counseling appointments,
without prior notification, will be unable to schedule additional appointments
with the Counseling Center for the remainder of that particular semester.
NOTE: The above policy does not apply to crisis situations.
That is, the center is always available during regular office hours
to any UCF-enrolled student experiencing a crisis or psychological emergency,
regardless of prior missed appointments.
