Groups & Workshops
Therapy Groups:
Returning Adult & Graduate Student Group
(Located at the Counseling Center)
Graduate students and adults returning to school are often faced with academic, social and family life demands that are developmentally different than traditional college-aged students. This group is designed for personal growth and self-awareness for students who are older than the typical 18-22 year old undergraduate. Issues that may be explored include: relationships, life transitions, family concerns and dealing with problems and stresses in academic life.
Interpersonal Relationships Group A (Room 103)
This group is for men and women wanting to better understand and improve their relationships with family, co-workers, friends, or romantic partners. Issues include communication in relationships, gender issues, assertiveness, beginning/ending relationships and interpersonal conflicts. Group members will explore important issues and gain knowledge and understanding that may lead to new and healthier relationships.
Interpersonal Relationships Group B (Room 104)
(Located at the Counseling Center)
The goals of this group are to facilitate self-understanding and to identify relationship patterns through exploring past issues with one’s family of origin, unresolved concerns with past intimate partners and ways they might affect present important relationships.Group members will learn to develop trust and express feelings more openly.
Emotionally Focused & Experiential Therapy Group
This group is for both women and men wanting to engage in deep personal exploration. Group members will gain awareness of self and others by participating in creative, expressive Gestalt experiences and techniques. This group will help members gain insight into one’s inner processes and learn to communicate with parents, friends, and other important relationships in the most authentic way.
It’s My Body!
This group is for women wanting to explore issues related to eating behaviors and body image. It provides an opportunity to learn how participants use food to cope with feelings or life stress and to share with others who have struggled with similar concerns in a safe environment. Themes of understanding and controlling unhealthy patterns with food, feelings about body image/acceptance, self-esteem, relationships and family issues will also be explored.
Women’s Group
This group is designed to provide a supportive atmosphere for women who are interested in obtaining a greater understanding of themselves and relating more comfortably with others. Issues that may be explored in this group include: self-esteem and self-acceptance, relationships with significant others, independence and interdependence and body image concerns.
Hope and Healing Group
This group is designed to provide support and healing to survivors of physical, sexual abuse or sexual assualt or trauma.
Support Groups:
Thesis & Dissertation Support Group
This group will offer a supportive environment for graduate students navigating through the thesis or dissertation process. Discussion topics will include overcoming obstacles, setting weekly goals, relationships with advisors and committee members, and managing stress or anxiety related to the thesis or dissertation. Students may begin at any time and attend as many sessions as they would like.
In, Out & In-Between
This group provides a safe environment for individuals to share their experiences, struggles and victories in being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Issues dealing with homophobia, relationships, coming out, being out, religion and family will be discussed.
